What is Screen Printing process in Textile ?

Screen printing is a popular printing method used in textile printing to apply designs onto fabrics such as cotton, silk, polyester, and others. The screen printing process in textile involves several steps, which are:

  • Design Preparation: The first step is to create the design to be printed. The design is typically created using graphic design software and printed onto a transparent film.

  • Screen Preparation: A screen is coated with a photosensitive emulsion and dried in a dark room. The design is then printed onto a transparency and placed onto the screen, which is then exposed to light, causing the emulsion to harden in the exposed areas.

  • Washing and Drying: The unexposed emulsion is washed away with water, leaving a stencil of the design on the screen. The stencil is then dried in a dark room.

  • Ink Preparation: The ink is mixed with a solvent or a medium to create the desired consistency and color. The ink is then poured onto the screen and spread across the stencil with a squeegee.

  • Printing: The fabric is placed on a flat surface, and the screen is placed on top of it with the stencil facing down. The ink is then pressed through the stencil and onto the fabric with the squeegee. This process is repeated for each color in the design, with a separate screen and stencil created for each color.

  • Curing: After the ink is applied, the fabric is heated to cure or set the ink. This is typically done in a heat press or a conveyor dryer, depending on the type of ink used.

Screen printing is a versatile and durable method of textile printing that can produce high-quality prints on a variety of fabrics. It is commonly used for printing T-shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, and other promotional items, as well as for printing large-scale designs on fabrics such as curtains and upholstery.
